Volkswagen operates in the Chinese market through two main joint ventures: SAIC Volkswagen and FAW Volkswagen. Most of its models are built and sold by the two joint ventures, so to make them different, the SAIC joint venture has an X after its name and the FAW joint venture Crozz.

The ID.4 X price cut of 20,000 yuan ($2,700) Volkswagen wants its joint venture partners to compete, the SAIC joint venture is slightly more successful than the joint venture with FAW, mainly because the ID.3 is only made by SAIC, but in the case of the ID.4, FAW sold more than SAIC last year.

The entry-level version, the ID.4 X Smart, is powered by a 52.8 kWh battery from CATL and is good for a CLTC range of 425 km. It is a WRD with an electric motor with a maximum output of 125 kW (9168 hp) and a peak torque of 310 Nm.

The ID.4 X Long Range trim has a larger battery with a capacity of 80.2 kWh and a CLTC range of 601 km. The electric motor is also mounted on the rear axle and has a power of 170 kW (228 hp). Peak torque remains unchanged at 310 Nm.

According to insurance registrations, SAIC Volkswagen's ID.4 X sold 34,498 units last year, about 3,000 fewer than its sister model, the ID.4 Crozz, from the FAW joint venture. It is SAIC Volkswagen's second best-selling electric car after the ID.3, which sold 93,816 units last year.

In January this year, the Volkswagen ID.4 was among the top five best-selling electric cars in the United States. In China, the ID.4 X sold 1,020 units, making it the 128th best-selling electric car. Its sister car, the ID.4 Crozz, sold 889 units, so their combined sales would put them in the top 100 at 94th place.
